O'Devaney Gardens in Dublin 7, right beside the Phoenix Park was a social housing flats complex built in the 1950's. Dublin City Council (County Council) let the flats fall into disrepair and after years of neglect and social problems and vandalism the Council stated de-tenanting the complex around 2007. There were ambitious plans unveiled at the time for a housing project comprising a mixture of private and social and affordable homes. The Clare builder Michael Mc Namara won a tender to develop the site but when boom turned to bust Mc Namara ended up in NAMA and the plans collapsed. Now O'Deveney is a derelict no-mans land although a few tenants remain and are holding out to get housed in the area in a redeveloped O'Deveney.
Simon Coveney, the new Fine Gael Housing Minister will soon decide what to do with this site, but the danger is that because of it's attractive location beside the Phoenix Park and a stone's throw from the Criminal Courts he may decide to gift it to the developers who are back in business and sniffing around for bargains where they can make millions again. The social housing promised to the residents in 2008 may be reneged on, especially as NAMA are involved here.
