This is a statement from Anthony Costello the man evicted from 28 pinewood Green road. Anthony currently has no Facebook so I’m posting on behalf of himself.
I have been on the housing list now for the last 6 year, and spent the last 2 years prior to my time in the property in Balbriggan jumping from one hostel to another. Earlier this year my older brother committed suicide in one of these hell holes they like to call hostels.
I had regular contact with both the housing bodies in parkgate street and FCC. I was instructed to find either a Hap or council property available.
I came across 28 pinewood green road in Balbriggan and when I was inquiring about the vacant property the residents of area informed me the this vacant house had been empty the last 2 years and it was a popular spot for all sorts of anti social behaviour, and dumping in the grounds of the property were a regular occurrence. When I asked the residents how they felt about me moving in they were delighted it would finally be home again.
I then went to the housing authorities and explained that I had identified this vacant property and I also had the backing of the residents. I was given the impression that they would sort out the official paper work and I could start to make this house my home, I began cleaning the house up and maintaining the front and back of the house at my own expense. The residents were great help in this as they wanted to also see me have a place to call home. Months had passed and despite regular contact the official confirmation never materialised, and then Tuesday of this week FCC along with the Garda decided to remove me from my home it’s the only place I have been able to call Home in many years.

The Garda armed response unit showed up earlier - with machine guns and battering rams - to attempt a forceful eviction on a homeless couple in emergency accommodation.
The couple felt they were being mistreated by the owner of the accommodation, his response was to call the cops.
They showed up and threatened to break down the door.
They've since left because of the community response but we're asking people to get to 16 Gardiner Street asap to build a bigger response to resist any attempts to evict.

Students from GMIT and NUI Galway set up shop in Eyre Square for a Crisis Campout to highlight the shortage of student accommodation in the city. The Students’ Unions from both colleges organised this eye-catching protest working together with One Movement Galway, a coalition of Trade Unions, Students’ Unions, and other civil groups. They say some students have to commute from as far away as Laois because they cannot afford the astronomical rents. Others have chosen somewhere different to Galway to pursue their studies. Many students are greatful for the locals who provide ‘digs’ for thousands of students and they say that without that help, many students would either find themselves homeless or they would be forced to give up on their studies.

Tenants invited us in to see some of the conditions they face and what we found shocked us.
Slum landlords, are profiting off hundreds of buildings like this, packing 5-10 to a room and charging 300-500 per person & councils are overcrowding flats, while leaving buildings boarded up.

One of the images we projected onto the Ires REIT apartment block in Sandyford. Ires REIT is making over €100,000 a DAY in rental income and thanks to Fine Gael they pay 0% corporation tax on it. It's the best little country to do business in....if you're a tax-shy global corporation that is.
And now NAMA are getting ready to sell off a nearby site with full planning permission for 460 apartments. The most likely buyer is a REIT.

I have no future in this city - I'm an English language teacher, and that simply doesn't pay me enough to afford to live here.
There's a lot I'd like to improve about myself but it's becoming harder and harder due to the cost of living, the housing instability and the anxiety that that instability brings. I still feel like a student with no permanent home, moving from house to house bringing my life in a suitcase and it's not a situation I want to continue.
Most of the students I've worked with as an English language teacher are in even worse situations. They all live in the most appalling conditions – it’s now seen as luxurious to share a room with only one person, but it’s more normal to share your room with 4, 5 or 6 people.
Anybody who's living in a nice and affordable rented place in Dublin knows that they're on a piece of wreckage floating in shark infested waters and all they can do is pray that they don't sink because if they do there's likely nowhere to go.
I'm not from Dublin and apart from some friends I have no real ties here. But I'm lucky that I can get out. I can't say the same for people who have families here - all I can say for them is may God help them."

As the Central Bank finally admits the obvious - that we are heading towards another economic meltdown - The Irish Times continues to spew fuel on our overheated property market urging buyers to burden themselves with insanely priced houses in a desperate bid to cling onto plummeting advertising revenues. Given what we know about the last crash less than a decade ago, the loss of our financial sovereignty and the wreckage austerity has brought to so many Irish people’s lives, this is nothing short of treason and another blatant example of how the mainstream media in Ireland put greed before the public interest time and time again.

South Dublin County Council sitting on a land bank of over 1,000 acres in Dublin Mid-West alone and not a house in sight. In order to keep your eye off it, they are proposing small controversial schemes anywhere but here. Until we get serious numbers of Public Housing built on the likes of this Public Land we will always have a housing crisis. In order for that to happen, they must first normalise homelessness just like the queues in our Hospitals. So far so good for them, the main parties who are doing nothing to stop this approach are going up in the polls. Join the protest for Public Housing on Public Land at our Council meeting on Monday 10th of September at 3pm where some key decisions related to this issue are due to be made.

Today we visited the Eyre Powell DP centre in Newbridge and spoke to some of the residence about the so call curfew or total ban of the use of electronic devices in their rooms. The residents are actually shocked and some of them are even scared to start to address this unfairness from the manager. They feel that those that are studying and want to do their school work during this time are deliberately been deprived this right. Many other issues are affected by this.
This all started with two roommates who had a disagreement with the usage of the phone. Now because the manager failed to address and resolve this issue with the two affected parties, he just decided on his own to impose this rule. They feel they are being treated as less human beings and said at least he should have called them and addressed the issue directly. David the manager went to an extent of delivering the notice to each room.
What can you do?
1. You can call the centre manager at 0894587651 as from tomorrow as he was not there during our visit.
2. Email his office and demand that this rule be revoked at once and personal apology letters to be sent to each resident.
3. Write letters to this man with same demands.
4. If this has not been done within three days, we stage a protest in front of this centre on Friday the 6th July 2018.
It's time to act together as one to protect those that are vulnerable in our society, who are ruled with fear and oppression.

The story of Block 8:
We, the families of Block 8 are currently living in tents outside the building due to sever internal structural damage to the stairwells. It appears the building is beginning to shift in its foundations and as it does so poses serious threat to those living there.
Last week, the council were notified of the deteriorating state of the building that is literally cracking under our feet. It has been recognised by the council that Cromcastle Court complex of flats is old, in bad repair and most likely in need of demolishing. The families have endured years of problems across the complexes, such as mould and damp, but the latest revelations of structural damage is the last straw

Peaceful protest to demand full investigation into demolition of family home
Labre Park Residents supported by the Ballyfermot Travellers Action Project will hold a peaceful protest outside Dublin City Hall tomorrow 20th June at 2.30 pm to demand an immediate investigation into the demolition of a family home (mobile home) in Labre Park, Ballyfermot, Dublin on Thursday, June 14th, 2018.
We demand that DCC Chief Executive Owen Keegan instruct a full investigation into the horrific incident in Labre Park on Thursday 14th June 2018 where a family’s home (mobile home), containing personal belongings and the history of their lives including photos and irreplaceable sentimental items were destroyed under instruction by Dublin City Council without the knowledge or consent of the family.
The investigation must include;
Who instructed this action and why?
What instructions and information was given by DCC to the contractor who demolished the family home? When were these instructions given?
What are the DCC policies in relation to the demolition of a home?
What are DCC policies in relation to instructing third parties to enter and remove belongings from a family home without the family’s knowledge or consent?
What steps had the council taken to ensure the rights and protection of the family?
What is the legislation required to be followed when such action is taken?
What evidence do DCC have that the requirements and protections of legislation were adhered to?
The demolition of a family’s home in these circumstances is an outrageous breach of human rights of the family.
Michael and Ann Connors and their children age 16, 12,11,9 and 6 are left devastated by the destruction of their home and traumatised having witnessed it.
The seriousness of this incident at a very minimum requires a full investigation and the person/s responsible for issuing the instruction to demolish a family home must be suspended immediately pending the outcome of the investigation.

A Balbriggan couple were jailed for a while yesterday for resisting moves by KBC "The Bank of You" to repossess their family home. Whatever about the bank's legal arguments this is the same couple who were set upon by 'security thugs' from NI, engaged by KBC, and physically evicted earlier this year leading to the Hearing in the High Court. We urgently need legislation to help keep people in their homes, not lip-service and spin from Government and Bank/Vulture Fund apologists!

The photo does not really do justice to the story. But it is a photograph of Herberton Apartments in Dublin 8. The apartments were built on the site of the former Fatima Mansions which was developed as a regeneration project under a public private partnership scheme barely over a decade ago.
Last Monday, the 19th of March a fire was apparrantly started deliberatley in the basement close to the service area for several of the buildings.
The fire threatened to reach the gas supply pipe network but thankfully didn't. However it did manage to severly damage other services to the apartment blocks that provide homes to many families. The electrical supply has been cut to all homes and businesses effecting many people.
I have spoken to several people who are Dublin City Council tenants under the approved housing body,Cluid Housing, who have been forced out of their homes since Monday and may not be able to return until next Monday at the very earliest.

The council recently paid nearly €1m for it and now want to demolish it to construct around 45 additional car parking spaces in the Herbert Rd car park. Hopefully they will do the right thing and vote against the proposal. We are in the middle of a housing crisis, this should be used for emergency accommodation for homeless women and children. Alternatively it would be a fantastic base for Jigsaw, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. This badly needed project is struggling to find a base in the Bray area.

I've been on two building sites in Dublin in the last fortnight. The homes in one development were built by a Cooperative. The homes in the second were built by a Private developer.
The 1,100 square foot three bed houses in the Cooperative sold for €165,000.
The 1,173 square foot three bed in the Private development are selling for €490,000.
The Cooperative homes can only be bought by owner-occupiers and are subject to a 'claw-back' payment if sold within ten years.
The Private can be bought by investors for rental, and 'flipped' for a quick profit whenever the owner wants.
Apart from the brick finish they look pretty similar from the outside. Internally the Cooperative housing is block built, the Private is timber frame. Both have similar energy ratings and both come with solar panels.

As we brace ourselves for the worst of Storm Emma and the Beast from the East, the standards of rented accommodation are of key concern. Many homes in the rental sector have very poor levels of energy efficiency resulting in cold, sometimes damp, and hard-to-heat accommodation.
250 tenants have already approached Threshold this year with standards and repairs issues, including:
• An expectant mother living with two young children in accommodation that is heated inadequately through two small electric heaters.
• A couple and their two children who all sleep in the living room of their home, which is heated through an open fire, as long-term problems with the central heating has resulted in cold, damp and mouldy bedrooms.
• A couple and their premature baby living in a cold and draughty property, where the heating and shower are broken and some of the windows don’t close properly.
We know from our work with people who contact us, that low physical standards and life in cold, damp homes can have serious impacts on both the physical and mental health of tenants and it is one of the most common issues with which renters come to Threshold.
We have been campaigning on the issue of standards in rented accommodation for some time. We ask that you and your friends lend your support to our campaign for standards, please sign our petition athttps://my.uplift.ie/…/ensure-minimum-standards-in-rented-a….

Galway eviction court today. 6 were granted. Many were adjourned for engagement with iCare, mortgage to rent, MABS, ambulance chasing PIP’s. Many more warned they are on their last chance. A number of mortgage holders explained that the banks were not engaging, preventing sale of properties and general stonewalling while all the time ramping up the interest and penalties. Some were struck out because of ‘capitalization’ of the arrears. All hidden away from the general public in the attic of Galway Circuit Court.

This morning I opened the property page to see an add from Dublin City Council not only reminding Landlords of their legal obligations of providing accommodation of a good standard. But also encouraging tenants to report poor standards to the Council giving an email account and contact telephone number.
This is a complete reversal of their previous policy of turning a blind eye to sub-standard accommodation. The reason for their 360* turn around is because of Barry O'Kelly's documentary "Nightmare to Let" which exposed the dreadful conditions people were living in which lots of councils around the country were ignoring.
Navan and emergency accommodation that Meath County Council were using featured in that program, again because of poor standards but I have yet to see Meath County Council take a proactive approach to improving rental accommodation.
Tenants you should be aware that you are entitled to not only report poor standards of rental accommodation to Meath County Council but your also entitled to get a copy of that report.
Hopefully we will see an add like this put in the Meath Chronicle by Meath County Council in order to stamp out slum landlords.

That was a cold night. A big well done to all our volunteers who braved the freezing weather earlier to provide food, hot drinks, hats, gloves, sleeping bags, new socks and clothing to 16 people.
We were never so happy to see as few of our regular service users on such a night as that most likely means they have found shelter or hopefully a hostel for the night.
All of the 16 people we provided for tonight had also secured hostel accomodation with the exception of one of our regulars who is now back sleeping in a disused shed as the roll over bed we had secured for him ceased immediately after Christmas as it was one of the famous "Cold weather" beds ?
Cold weather beds are not determined by the actual weather but a calendar period in time........shamefully !

What a start to 2018. Our first night out in 2018 and we were nearly blown into the liffey. Weather warnings issued, people being warned to take extra precautions when driving. But where were the extra precautions for our homeless?
We couldn't even take many pictures as we had to hold everything down to stop them blowing away. Could you imagine trying to settle down in that in a damp doorway with the wind blowing everything at you. Ireland 2018??? You wouldn't think so.

Every time I visit Kilmacud House DP Centre in Stillorgan, where many asylum seekers including myself were accommodated, I find out something new to consider. This time, as I continued to take photographs, I was astounded by the huge wall and growing vegetation that secluded us from the rest of the society. The building was operating as a DP Reception Centre from 14/02/2001-04/03/2010 and it was run by the Victory Christian Fellowship. They were payed more then 10 millions to run it. The capacity was 90 people. The building and the site were sold recently for 2,780,000 euros. I suggest that this building or any other closed and not yet 'transformed' or sold DP carceral site should be returned back to people. We can then have a museum of Direct Provision; of the incarceration and confinement of people who came to Ireland to seek a protection. Then we can draw the parallels, or make a comparative study of similarities and differences between the last Magdalene Laundry in Sean McDermott street, that is hopefully not going to be sold and turned in to a hotel and DP Carceral site/s.
