It was minus 2 last night in Dublin. I don't know what it will be tonight. This is a picture of a Dublin City Council worker dumping two bone-dry, folded up, perfectly good sleeping bags in the bin on o'connell Bridge this morning. I asked him not to do it and leave them there as it was clear they'd only been there a minute and whoever left them was coming back. He said this is Dublin City Council policy. I rang Dublin City Council, who confirmed this to be the case. Absolute madness.

News coming in from Dundalk that a house that was repossessed in the last few days by the banks leaving an elderly couple homeless has been liberated this afternoon. Today society members along with anti-eviction and community activists took back a home for a family who were evicted by a foreign vulture fund.
Having listened to the harrowing ordeal the elderly couple were put through during the eviction by Sean Cahill and his eastern European thugs it only increases our resolve to stop these economic evictions. It was heart warming to see neighbours and the local community come out to help clean up the home. We witnessed the appalling internal damage caused by the eviction thugs including smashed toilet bowls and sisterns, broken windows and smashed cooker hob. The family are back in the home with the full support of their friends and neighbours, local activists now have the home on 24 hour watch.
Sean Cahill has stepped into the eviction void left by Ian Gordan and his British army/Loyalist mercenaries.
We are now calling on Cahill and his thugs to cease and desist all eviction work with immediate effect.

The family who where told no emergency accommodation was available for them were given sleeping bags by a state funded agency and abandoned to fend for themselves for the night. Just finished a meeting with the residents at Portsalon in Co Donegal, the most remote place you can think of. It takes them the whole day with buses to travel to Dublin. They are threatened to be reported to the police if the complain. Two residents have been removed already to Drishan Castle in Millstreet for speaking up. The Ombudsman wonder why people do not complain. The residents fear the owner and his wife as they shout at them calling them all sorts of names promising to deport them. They do not feel safe at all when Joseph is around.
We also spoke to the Billy from Litterkeny Community Centre, who confirmed that they have not been barred from coming to the house and interact with residents, but they must sign the book for accountability purposes. They are preparing an official statement now about the incident that happened there and will address the issue with Joe. I'm sure RIA doesn't even know where this place is.

imagine a lot of you read the short stories in the Home Truths blog that was run last year. I read them myself and found a lot of them absolutely heart breaking. With the permission of some of the admins here I’m working on making a short film that tells the stories of a few people from the blog.
A picture paints a thousand words and it might be a great way of getting the human cost of this housing disaster across to any members of the public who are still blissfully unaware of it.
The outline for the film is really simple – actors would read the stories while footage showing the housing stock (or lack thereof) around the city would play – to try and give an impression of the lonliness and desperation that so many people are going through. We did some street photography last week of exteiors (boarded up windows and doors, construction sites and demolished houses, cold and empty streets, etc) but if possible id love some interior footage too.

This is a rip-off apartment, at €1,700 pm for 25 SqM, to rent in Grove Park, Rathmines brought to you by the Vultures, Val Issuer DAC who profit off our misery. They are buying up properties all over the Rathmines area and forcing people from the community. They issue eviction notices ( through their wholly-owned letting agents, Belgrave Property) to long standing tenants for "Substantial Refurbishments" as a ruse to jack up the rents and driving low and middle income earners from the Rathmines area. We are supporting many tenants, some in Grove Park, who are at risk of eviction by them, and they are standing together and not leaving.

Election Eviction Threat! Upper Sherrard St, D1, pls be on standby & share!
Today, Friday the 24th of May, the day of local & european elections, 2 sisters & their mam are facing down an illegal eviction threat on upper sherrard st d1.
The family had their rent illegal increased by 200e & then within weeks saw part of their living room roof cave in (picture below). The landlord and letting agent first ignored their requests to have it fixed & then told them to get out today the 24th with no written notice (illegal).
The mam has lived in her home for 12 years & her daughters 4 years!
The family bravely told the letting agents they would not move! The reply was 'you know what will happen friday' a clear threat.

Empty apartments in Dundrum? Any idea why?
A few people have asked me about what appear to be empty apartments in Dundrum Town Centre. There seems to about fifteen of them.

They're located on the Sandyford Road side of the centre. Does anyone know the background to them and why they've been left like this for long?

More examples of closed up council homes. This time in Loreto Court. Three one-bed homes, making up 25% of the development, with shuttered doors. Units for older folk, like these ones, should be used for those who want to downsize from three and four bed houses. UPDATE on the mother and children whose landlord removed their front door yesterday evening... They are now in temporary emergency B&B accommodation... The cowardly landlord who couldn't be contacted last night can now put the door back...
When talking to the young mother not long ago she said that she saw the suggestions by some people that the house should be damaged... She said that she wouldn't do that as it would lower her to the landlord's level... She asked that I request that nobody does any harm whilst the property is unsecured...
Before she left it for the last time this evening she tidied it as best she could...

Inside Dáil Éireann the landlord class say homelessness won't be solved "overnight", because it's not a life and death struggle.
Outside Dáil Éireann this is how the forgotten class solve the homeless crisis "overnight", because it is a life and death struggle.
This cardboard was gathered by a man for his friend who just got out of hospital in Dublin.
One of the hardest jobs in Ireland is to survive on the streets and help others survive as well.
Remember that when you walk by them like a better class of person.

13 Travelller families on the outskirts of Galway city are paying the council €40 a week, that’s €2080 a month for a rat infested halting site next to a waste recycling plant. This was to be a temporary arrangement but they are there since 2008. The shared facilities including a kitchen and toilets are in serious disrepair, with damp, mould and rotting floors andwalls, no glass in the window frames, sinks coming away from the walls and floors that have holes because rats have chewed through them. They have photographs of dead and live rats and one woman describes last week opening her tumble-drier to find two rats “warm and roasting with the heat” among her laundry. It’s not a question of money. Since 2010, of the €2.57 million allocated to Galway city by the Department of Housing for Traveller accommodation, only half of this was spent. The problem is that Galway council’s chief executive, Brendan McGrath faced strong opposition from the county councillors when he threatened to use his executive powers to provide the families that includes 40 children with accommodation. He backed down and the families are living in conditions that break all health and safety regulations.

The queue to rent an apartment in Dublin. This is Ireland in the 21st century. A government that refuses to build housing and lets rents run riot.

With cold weather warnings in place and temperatures plummeting, we are calling for 24 hour hostel opening and all services to be extended. People should not have to leave hostels in the morning to walk the strets in the cold.
